Paul - Trumpet
Paul has been with Turn It loose almost from the beginning. He has a degree in music after studying at Chethams School of Music. Although trumpet is his main instrument, keyboards play a big part in his creativity, such as writing scores for films and websites. He has played in many bands across many varied styles of music. Influences range from Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock through to The chemical Brothers and The Prodigy.
Colette - Vocals
Colette joined Turn It Loose in 1995 at a time when the band was undergoing major changes. Colette brought with her a wealth of experience honed from her time with contemporary soul band Times Square. She has been involved with projects such as One Eleven, a jazz-funk and soul band, and also, The Funk Squad, an all woman funk outfit. Her powerful voice and unforgettable delivery have made Colette an essential hallmark of a Turn It Loose performance.
Craig - Keyboards
Craig joined the band Turn It Loose as a dep. keyboard player in 1998. After two years of standing in on occasions, he is now the keyboard player full time. He has been playing the keyboards since the age of 8,and has furthered his musical knowledge and experience by gaining a degree in music and now teaches A level in school. Craig also performs in the band Tonic, with two of the band members - Nick and Malc.
Bob - Trumpet
Bob has performed with many groups covering various different styles including Jazz, Pop, Funk, and of course, soul. He began his career on Manchester's Jazz circuit but was soon playing with 60's band Rolled Gold that played large venues across the UK for several years. In 1997 Turn it Loose opted for two trumpeters rather than one and Bob was asked to join the band. The following year he toured Sweden with The Commitments and in 1999 formed popular Funk/Acid Jazz group Superfly. He performed on a recent album by rock band Moolah and also joined them for a televised gig at famous London venue The Astoria
Meryl - Vocals
Meryl has sung professionally for over ten years, performing for many years at Granada Studios and touring with various dance and vocal groups. As a soloist, in The Baker Street Buskers she performed Old Tyme Music Hall, in The Burlington Players sang classics from musicals, while in The Madisons she gave 50's Doo-Wop new life. Meryl's background is in theatre, being involved in many productions as technician, stage manager, producer, actor and finally with the 'Maiden' Theatre Company as director. Maiden's projects were prize winning and greatly acclaimed, touring extensively across UK venues including the Edinburgh Fringe and the Hebridean Islands. In recent vocal roles, Meryl has paid tribute to Abba and Pink Floyd. Currently teaching, Meryl shares a love and enthusiasm for the arts with children in her class and drama club.
Nick - Vocals & Guitar
Nick joined Turn It Loose in its early years and since mid-‘97 has fronted the band as singer. In the past he as played in blues, funk and soul bands, most notably funk-pop band Reason to reason who were described in a local newspaper as “a stray cross between Level 42 and Gary Moore”. He as fronted various incarnations of the Nick Marland Blues Band in which he paid homage to his blues men heroes. On free nights he can be seen jamming on down in the blues/rock boogie trio Tonic.
Bryan - Drums
This year sees a welcome return to drummer Bryan who has played for the band in past years. Bryan performs in countless bands and has toured throughout the world including France, Denmark, Norway, North Africa etc. Most notable ventures include performing with Hamish Stuart (average white band, Paul McCartney vocalist) and Snake Davis (sax player to Lisa Stansfield, M-People) more recently he has just finished recording drums for an album released in September by Ricky Tomlinson (Royle family-father).
Ollie - Bass
Ollie is the band's new bass player, however Ollie is no stranger to the Turn It Loose family and has been involved in projects with almost every other member of the band! Including the Commitments Touring band with Rico and Bob and Salsa band Alma Del Barrio with drummer Bryan.
In June 2000 Ollie headlined the Manchester Jazz festival with his own band Subterranea and continues to write and produce is own music. More recently Ollie has made TV appearances with 80's pop icons Curiosity Killed The Cat. And has been recording and touring with "Jersey Street" - Glasgow Underground's Gospel / R&B group.
Julie - Vocals
Julie is the most recent member of Turn It Loose and brings with her, not only an outstanding voice, but also various media skills as a graduate from Salford University. She has strong links with TV companies ( BBC, Granada & Mersey Side) and has been seen on various TV dramas and documentaries, including Coronation Street. Her singing career has taken her to featuring on Manchester’s most successful independent label ‘Fat City’, gospel choirs in Birmingham and notably performing with Courtney Pine.
Rico - Sax
Italian born Rico has been playing the saxophone since he was 16. Having moved to Manchester in 1993, he was one of the two current members who performed on Turn It Loose's first performance that year. Having studied music and recording, he has since performed with various soul, jazz, blues and funk bands since 1993 including The Commitments. Though he has played the world over in countries including Australia, Switzerland, France, Italy, Sweden and Cyprus to name but a few, he lives in Manchester and has his roots based firmly with Turn It Loose!
